 I spent Tuesday finishing my project’s vlog, which took a while because Windows Movie Maker, the software on our computers, is very bad. It has so many glitches, which is frustrating because they have not changed the software in years. It took a while because whenever I made a cut somewhere, it affected something else in another place. I finally finished it. Wednesday, I went down to the stadium to shadow and assist the events team. There was a luncheon in the Duck Club. It was a very busy day for them because there was this event and then an event after while the game was going on. I got there and helped set up the food, made sure everything was tidy, and cleaned anything dirty or any smudges on the windows. Once the guests started arriving, our job was to help them if they needed anything, and I also was behind the bar getting them whatever drink they wanted. Terry Pluto from the Plain Dealer spoke, so it was interesting to hear him answer everyone’s questions. After he was finished, it took everyone a while to leave, so we waited around. Then we ate some food and cleaned up. There was a lot of trash to throw out. We put away the food, put down new table cloths, swept the floors, and reset the room. I was glad I could help out and could tell they appreciated it. I was able to talk to Brian and Sam during the event and ask them any questions I had about their jobs. While the event was going on, the players were practicing on the field, so it was exciting to see. On my way out, I watched some. I then went by the offices one last time to say thank you to Mr. Babby and capped off a great project in Akron. I hope to be back in a few weeks if Hawken’s baseball team makes it.

While Wednesday morning was supposed to be the start of Hawken Projects, mine did not start until 6:35 pm. The time for the first pitch of the Akron Rubberducks vs the Erie Seawolves. Akron came in on a four-game win streak, and I was very excited for my first time at Canal Park. The start of my project was delayed because I had the sectional tournament for tennis. From there, I drove to the game to meet my mentor, Ken Babby, the owner of the Rubberducks along with Jim Pfander, the general manager. We met to plan out my project and decide what exactly I would be working on. I then went with Mr. Babby to the Champions Club, an exclusive restaurant for select ticket holders, to get food. He was very curious to hear my input as someone at a game for the first time. We then sat right behind home plate to watch the game. He left me on my own after a bit to explore.  This week is a much busier week for me since the team is in town. Monday, I met with Brian Lobban, the manager of corporate partnerships and special events, and Sam Dankoff, the vice president of premium experience. I learned about their roles with the events side, and they also explained that during the games, they take on different jobs. Canal Park hosts dinners, 5Ks, and high school games. This allows them to bring in revenue all year. The ballpark isn't winterized, so they only use the Duck Club in the off-season. It is an upstairs space in the corner of right field. They have to work with the operations staff and finance office to make sure every aspect is ready for the event. I also asked them about all of the time spent working. In season they work all day and even late into the night with games. They also often have weekend games.  The start of my second week was a little slow. Akron plays away this week, and I am working virtually. They are one game behind first in their division and have been playing well recently. I started this week off by working on my notes from the game last week for Mr. Babby. I gave feedback from my experience being at the ballpark for the first time and gave some suggestions. I appreciate his desire to hear my opinion. I expanded on my notes, so I could just send him the document and wouldn’t need to take up time with a meeting to explain everything. I also met with Kyle Hixenbaugh, the director of marketing and promotions. I learned about his role and all of the planning that goes into the promotions schedule. They have a new promotion every night, so that means every game, there is new media they need to create for the games.
