Blog #3
The start of my second week was a little slow. Akron plays away this week, and I am working virtually. They are one game behind first in their division and have been playing well recently. I started this week off by working on my notes from the game last week for Mr. Babby. I gave feedback from my experience being at the ballpark for the first time and gave some suggestions. I appreciate his desire to hear my opinion. I expanded on my notes, so I could just send him the document and wouldn’t need to take up time with a meeting to explain everything. I also met with Kyle Hixenbaugh, the director of marketing and promotions. I learned about his role and all of the planning that goes into the promotions schedule. They have a new promotion every night, so that means every game, there is new media they need to create for the games. He is one of the only full-time employees that work in this department, but he has many interns that work on game days. I was tasked with creating my own promotions schedule. There are about 70 home games which means I need to be very creative. I am doing a lot of research into the various things Akron is known for and trying to come up with some new ideas. Kyle said a popular promotion is the cash dash, where they dump money in the outfield, and a group of people start at home plate and have to run to get it. He also said that while it may seem like a good idea to do the popular promotions on weeknights to get people to come to the games, it is best to leave them on weekends to be the most effective. I will work on the calendar for the rest of the week and continue to set up meetings.
Isn't it interesting how many other things are involved in the business of sports? I appreciate our zoom chat the other day and your takeaways on how many people and departments are involved in building the organization. 70 promotions seems like quite a challenge - especially if the goal is to create a unique but consistent experience at the ball field. This project seems like a perfect fit for you.
